AWS EC2 instances typically are set to default user ‘ubuntu’, ‘debian’, etc. If you’re trying to sudo some foo, and you can’t quite find the password in the documentation, typically there is not one set. WHA? Yea, the root user has no password by default. So, you will have to “sudo su -” and ‘passwd’ to get it set. Pretty generic info but not everyone knows this, and I get a lot of questions outside of my day job on how user and sudo permissions work.
